Remember when you first brought your puppy home? He was fresh and new, and you were just getting to know each other. The two of you went through training together, maybe even ate together. After a while, you and your dog became extremely close – perhaps closer than you are some people you know. Your dog is probably your best friend.

Today a dogs tag is more than just something that makes a doggie fashion statement the dogs tag is important to protect your dog too.  When you attach the dogs tag to your favorite collar you are doing  a lot to provide you with the best protection against losing your pet. Many lost dogs are never reunited with their owners because they lacked ID tags.  Just think back to when you first brought you new puppy home.  In a very short time after getting to know each other you and your companion became close.

You have grown to love your dog and the bond between the two of you is a special one, whatever his faults, even an important part of your life.  He has come to depend on you for everything like feeding, play, and providing him with discipline.  So it is for all of  these reasons and more, that you need to take steps to protect your dog from harm, and or never coming back, by making sure you get him a dog tag.

Dog tags come in many shapes, sizes and prices, even styles and colors.  You can get cheaper made plastic dog tags, but the higher quality tags are better made and therefore more durable.  Those that like to splurge can even get a dogs tag in sterling silver, or gold, or even a diamond dog tag.

The good thing about your dogs tag is that people will know you the dog belongs to.  The following are a few steps in which you can insure that your precious friend and companion will be returned to you if he turns up at a shelter or agency, or is found by a neighbor.

First you will need to settle on just what information about your dog to put on the tag.  First be sure to have your dogs tags engraved with his name and your phone number, and you could also put your cell phone number on the tag too, if you know you will have this number for a long time. 

Another step is to put some additional information on the tags including your dog’s dietary restrictions, or vaccination information.  In fact some local municipalities might even require you to do this anyway.

You might also want to consider getting more than one set of dog tags.  You can have a set for every dog collar.  This way you can make sure that your dog is has a pet ID tag, since you will be sure that he is always wearing a dog collar and dog ID tag.

Another great idea is that you can even laser-etch a photo of you and your dog on the tag, many dog tag manufacturers will to do this.
