House Training Puppies Tip 1 – Develop a Schedule of Puppy Training

You will have more success in house training puppies if you take him outside on a consistent and frequent schedule. You will need get your puppy to learn that the area for relieving himself is outside in the yard, not in your home.  This is something you will need to teach him as soon as he arrives in your home.

Take your dog outside if you think he may need to relieve himself, doing this during the first two months of so after your puppy has arrived.  It is during this period that it is critical in being able to successfully house train your puppy. It is important to set up a regular feeding schedule for your puppy because most puppies usually need to be fed three or four times a day, depending on their age. Crate-training is essentially the use of a small indoor kennel (the crate) to confine your young puppy when you’re not actively supervising her.

How does it work?

Crate training is based on all dogs’ inherent dislike of soiling the area where they sleep. Because you’re restricting your puppy’s movement to her sleeping space, she’ll instinctively “hold it in” until she’s let out of the crate (provided you don’t leave her in there too long, of course!)

This is why it’s important that the crate is sized properly: if it’s too big, she’ll be able to use one end as a bed and one end as a toilet, which defeats the whole purpose!

How do I choose a crate?

As a general guideline, it’s more cost-effective for you to choose a crate that’s big enough for your puppy to grow into. It should be big enough for the adult dog to stand up comfortably without crouching, turn around in, and stretch out – but no bigger (so that she doesn’t choose one part as her bed, and one part as her toilet!)

Because the adult dog is likely to be considerably larger than the puppy, it’ll most likely be necessary for you to use a barrier to reduce the internal size of the crate, like a wire grille or board.  Or you can make or use a cheap crate and replace it with a larger model as your puppy grows.

Using the crate for house training

Crate training works like this: your puppy is in that crate at all times unless she’s sleeping, eating, outside with you going to the toilet, or being played with (active supervision.)

You’ll need to be consistent, or else it won’t work: you can’t let your puppy wander off through the house unless you’re focusing your complete attention on her.

If you allow her access to the house before she’s thoroughly house trained, you’re basically encouraging her to relieve herself inside – and remember, each time she does this, it’ll be easier for her to do it again.

Crate training generally takes one to two months (depending on the breed of your dog and how much time you spend on the training process.) As the puppy grows older, you can begin to reduce the amount of time spent in the crate – but beware of doing this too soon!

She wants to be outside, being showered with affection and attention, and hanging out with you (of course!) But it is for her own good – in a  short time, she’ll come to accept the crate as her own personal haven where she can go to relax and get a couple hours  sleep. It’s important to persevere: do not respond to any whining or crying.

- The best place for the crate to be is the hub of the household: usually the den or the kitchen, anywhere where people tend to congregate. Just because she’s in the crate doesn’t mean she can’t still feel like part of the household; it’s important for her not to feel isolated or excluded.

- The crate should be a welcoming place for her to go. Lay a couple of thick blankets or towels on the floor, and place a few toys and a chew inside. The door should be open at all times (unless she’s in there, of course, in which case it should be securely shut.)

Some toilet facts about puppies that will come in handy

- Puppies’ bladders and bowels are so small and weak that they have only a small window of opportunity between knowing that they need to go, and having that need become an immediate reality. It is therefore imperative that you take her outside as soon as she wakes up, and within ten minutes of eating or playing.

- Behaviors that indicate she needs to go outside include sniffing the ground and circling. So as soon as she starts, take her out right away. – The maximum amount of time that a puppy can be crated at one time is figured out using the following equation: her age in months, plus one. So, a three-month old puppy can be crated for a maximum of four hours. However, this is likely to be physically pretty uncomfortable for her (not to mention hard on her emotionally and psychologically), so you should really take her out at least once every two hours during the day. If she’s sleeping, of course, just let her sleep until she wakes up naturally.

It is important to understand that your puppy probably probably will not be completely house trained until he’s about 6 months old.  That is due to the fact that many times young puppies will lack the bladder and bowel control that is required for you to be able to trust them to be left alone for long periods of time.

You also need to be available to watch over and supervise your new puppy but of course that is not always possible what with busy lifestyles.  If this is the case you might want to consider confining your puppy to a small puppy-proof room.  You need to make sure that the entire floor is covered with either a newspaper or some absorbent, disposable material.  In the beginning, you will find that your puppy will go everywhere in the room.  As he gets older he will come to favor one area. 

Slowly reduce the area covered in papers until the puppy eventually goes only on the toileting paper.  The floor in this puppy-proof room should not resemble other floor areas in your home as the carpeting or hardwood areas.  Once your puppy is used to eliminating on one surface, he will want to eliminate on that type of surface.

If you want to train your puppy to use only papers, then your goal is complete.  Most dog owners prefer for their dogs to eliminate outside the house so you should only use the puppy-proof room when you are not at home to supervise. 

Your puppy should be spending some time in a crate at first, so you can place papers in one area in the crate for your puppy to use.  Dogs are naturally very clean animals and they will usually try not to soil their bed area.  This can really assist your puppy in being able to develop self control.

If your puppy must be outdoor trained, take him to his designated toilet area every 45 minutes.  When your puppy relieves himself in his designated area, make sure to lavish praise on him. 

Don’t be afraid to look like a fool when you are giving your dog this praise. Your puppy is learning the most important lesson for him living in your household so don’t be afraid to go overboard with this praise.

Put your puppy on a consistent feeding schedule during the day so you will be able to anticipate his needs.  While he does require free access to clean, fresh drinking water, make sure you do not give him any unrestricted access to food.  Also, at least until he is fully house trained, do not give him unlimited run of your house. 

One thing that will greatly help you in this training process is putting a collar and long lead on your puppy and tying the other end of the lead around your waist. 

Your puppy will like being close to you and he won’t have the opportunity to make many mistakes. If mistakes do happen, don’t punish or reprimand him. 

He may not understand the reason for the punishment and this will cause him to become nervous or agitated.  It would be easy for hime to think he is being punished for eliminating in the first place. This could cause a setback in your training instead of making progress and moving forward.

The important thing you must have when it comes to house training your puppy is patience and a good sense of humor.  Maintain a calm and relaxed attitute  while at the same time maintaining a consistent dog training schedule and your puppy will be relaxed and calm while he learns what he needs to do to become a well adjusted member of the family.

Your adorable, cute new puppy has arrived.  You are very pleased to have him and he is happy to have a family like yours.  But before long you see that there are 2 dog behaviors you need to deal with almost immediately – jumping on people and biting.

As for jumping on people this is a problem that you or others might tend to overlook at the beginning.  After all he is so little and cute, that little tail is wagging and, besides, isn’t socialization and getting used to people important? 

Of course socialization and getting used to people is necessary but just allowing him to jump on people is not the best way to do it. Imagine your cute, little puppy as a grown up 80 – 100 pound adult dog.  Will he be so cute then when he jumps on people?  No andit could potentially be dangerous if he should jump on children or small adults because he could easily knock them down.

The best time to do puppy training, when while he is still a puppy.  When your young puppy starts to jump up on you or someone else, gently place the puppy’s feet back on the floor. While he remains standing there, make sure to praise him extensively. 

Give him an alternative to jumping up on someone. 

The reason why puppies jump up on people is to express their enthusiasm, and so this makes it important to redirect this energy in a more socially acceptable direction.  Try teaching the puppy to give someone his paw instead of jumping up on them. 

When teaching the puppy to not jump up on people, you must make sure to be consistent.  Consistency is important in any training program, and all members of the family as well as friends must understand that the puppy is not permitted to jump on them – ever.

Biting is one of those things that almost every puppy seems to do, and they must be taught not to do it.  Like many dog behaviors, such as jumping up on people, biting and nipping might appear cute when your puppy is small, but certainly not when he getsolder, larger and stronger.  Many times, most puppies learn to control their biting reflex from their mothers and from their littermates. When the puppy becomes overenthusiastic, like during nursing or playing, the mother dog, will be sure to quickly issue a correction.

Of course, sometimes this type of natural correction can be lacking, especially when many puppies are removed from their mothers when they are still quite young.  It is therefore up to you to take over this important process.

Socializing the puppy with other dogs and puppies is one of the best and most effective ways to teach the puppy the appropriate, and non appropriate way to bite,and to curb the biting response.

You will find that some communities and many pet stores sponsor puppy playtime and puppy kindergarten classes, which can be greatplaces for puppies to be able to socialize with each other, and with other humans and animals too. 

While the puppies play with each other, and they will naturally bite and nip each other.  If one puppy starts to become too rough or bites too hard, theother puppies will quickly respond by correcting him.

When the puppy is young is the best time for his socialization to take place.  It is important that every dog be properlysocialized, since a poorly socialized dog, or one that has not been socialized at all, has the potential to become dangerous and even neurotic. 

Many experts agree that puppies should be socialized before they have reached the age of 12 weeks, or threemonths.

Another reason for early socializing of the puppy is that many times mothers of young children may be somewhat reluctant to allow their young children to play with older or larger dogs.  Since socializing the dog with other people is just as important as socializing it with other dogs, it is best to do it when the puppy is still young enough to be non threatening to everyone.

It is important that the puppy be exposed to a wide variety of different stimuli during the socialization process.  This process should include letting the puppy be more exposed to a wide variety of other animals, including other puppies, adult dogs, cats and other domestic animals. 

Also you should make sure that the puppy be introduced to as wide a cross section of people as possible, including young children, and older people.  While this is very important in providing the puppy with life lessons and preventing him from biting, you can also give the puppy appropriate things to play with and bite. This is another good way to control inappropriatebiting. 

Providing a variety of chew toys, ropes and other things the puppy can chew is important to preventing boredom, keeping his teeth polished and keeping him from chewing things that he is not supposed to chew.

So it is important to be consistent when teaching your puppy not to bite.  You need to encourage each member of the family, as well as close friends who may visit, to try to discourage the puppy from biting.  If only one person permits the puppy to chew on them while everyone else does not, the puppy can become confused, thus making the training process that much more difficult.
