Positive reinforcement as a method of dog training is a break with the past techniques for dog training, some of which were quite inhumane, including the use of pain and threats. What makes positive reinforcement work is that natural instinct of all dogs is to please their owners, and this plays into the theory of positive reinforcement. Positive reinforcement recognizes the fact that lessons are a more effective way to teach dogs. This means that when a dog is able to figure out your commands in their own time and using their own brains.

Some ways for you to help the dog training process along is through the use of meaningful rewards, like tempting food treats as a primary incentive to help keep your dogs learning at a high standard, instead of just a pat on the head.

Make sure that your dog knows what he is being rewarded for when he obeys a command, you use the right timing as you mark the behavior that you’re going to reward so that, when he gets the treat, he understands just what behavior it was that earned him the reward.

It is also important to be consistent with yours dog training command, as in using the same command though consistent repetition, using the same phrase every time. The actions should be associated with a particular phrase, since your dog’s rate of obedience will be much better if you choose one particular phrase and use it every time you wish him to perform a particular behavior for you.

This article should give you a basic insight into some of the more helpful methods and techniques you could use when training your dog. However, the subject remains pretty complex, and it’s a good idea to learn as much about effective training techniques as possible. One excellent resource for dog training is Secrets to Dog Training: the ultimate training and knowledge database for dog owners. You should see to it that you take your Labrador puppy to be taught through a proper obedience program, as this will give you the necessary confidence that will enable you to train your Labrador puppy to be a truly great dog and companion.

Below are 5 Labrador puppy training tips that can help you in train your Lab.

Labrador Puppy Training Tip 1. Housebreaking – First thing to do is get a crate. Most of the time if a puppy starts his training in a crate can accept the crate very well. A puppy should never be allowed to run loose in the house. If there is no one around to watch the puppy, he should be put in the crate.

Next your Labrador puppy will need to learn is that his bathroom is outside in the yard, not inside your home. He will need understand this beginning from the first day he arrives in your home. You will have a perfectly housebroken pet by following these steps:

Take your dog outside if you think he may need to relieve himself, doing this during the first 8 to 9 weeks after your Lab puppy has arrived, since this period is critical in insuring successful housebreaking. You should take him out every hour, 5 minutes after eating or drinking, after playtime or exercise. Other times for taking him out is if he becomes excited, right before bed, and of course, immediately after he wakes up in the morning.

Labrador Puppy Training Tip 2. Obedience class for your Lab – Enroll your Labrador puppy in obedience classes as soon as he can meet the age requirement. The proper obedience training that you would receive from a qualified dog training instructor will give you the tools you will need continue to train your dog. The end result will be that you will have a Labrador puppy who will be a well-trained dog that can take direction from you.

Labrador Puppy Training Tip 3. Always strive to be Consistent with Your Labrador Puppy Training – Consistency is required for Labrador puppy training. You should be using one word commands and the same hand signals when you are training a Labrador puppy. The more repetitious you are, the faster your dog will learn. Also, don’t forget to take breaks during the training and try to make it fun for your dog, since dogs are known to have rather limited attention spans. Be sure to reward him when he obeys. Remember, Labs like most dogs will eat anything, but they really love their treats.

Use one-word dog training commands, as one-word commands will be easier for your Labrador puppy to understand in the beginning. You should start your training by teaching your Labrador puppy the ’sit’ command. Use the same one-word dog training command consistently or the puppy will not understand the command. For example, say, “Sit” instead of “Sit down.” Or sometimes “Sit” and sometimes “Sit down.” Always be consistent with your dog training command terms.

Labrador Puppy Training Tip 4. Employing Correct Discipline in Your Dog – There are going to be times when you need to enforce discipline in your Labrador puppy training. But disciplining your dog should not include shouting at your dog. When your dog does something wrong, look him in the eye and use a firm tone of voice to say “No”. Show him how to do what you asked, and then use praise with him to help him understand why he is being praised. Discipline is important during puppyhood, but remember never hit your Labrador puppy!

Labrador Puppy Training Tip 5. Giving Your Dog Praise – Every time your Labrador puppy listens to your commands and obeys them and does them right you praise him. He will like hearing the praise, and he will just become more devoted over time and be even more determined to do things in a way that pleases you.

Here we will look at Basic Dog Obedience Training Command 5 – Down

The down command is a very useful basic dog obedience command to teach your dog. This is another command that can save a dog’s life. This command should be taught right after your dog has mastered the ’sit’ command.

As with the other commands treats are an important dog obedience training tool.

First get your dog’s attention by saying his name. Once you have his attention and is already in the sitting position place the treat near his nose allowing him to sniff it. When your dog starts to nibble on the treat, lower the treat towards the ground, until the dog is in the down position. When he is laying down, release the treat.

Repeat over and over in short and sharp training sessions until your dog begins to understand the action.

Even with puppies the puppy training treats you select are also just as effective. Be sure to have a pocket full of dog training treats when teaching your dog how to sit, stay, heel, or perform other similar commands. Check that the dog finds the dog training treats to be tasty. Dog treats that are dried up, poor quality, and tasteless will not make your dog as interested in being rewarded the way that a delicious piece of meat and the sweet aroma of cheese would.

Do you ever wonder how much dogs can really taste? Does it really matter whether to your dog if you get him the beef liver treats or the turkey liver treats? In the end isn’t it all just the same anyway? How much can the dog really tell the difference? Well anyone who has a dog knows they will eat just about everything, save the occasional vegetable.

Many experts say that dogs have a keen sense of smell, in some ways more than that of a human, although their sense of taste is less well developed. So does it really matter whether you feed him dog training treats that include the beef liver treats or the turkey liver treats? Isn’t it all just the same to your dog in the end?

Even if a dog is deprived of the smell sense, he should be able to show a preference for a meaty diet rather than a meatless one, even though he can not tell the difference between beef, pork, or poultry if he lack the help of the smell. The dog appreciates a high-fat diet, providing the fat are of good quality: rancid fats induce food refusal. The dog is more able than the cat to appreciate a sweet. Dogs can detect the presence of salt at a lower concentration too.

As anyone who has ever owned a dog knows they will eat just about everything, other than occasional vegetables. Also it doesn’t seem to matter what anyone around the dog is eating, the desire for food is the same. Why should the dog training treats be any different?

While it is a good idea to offer dog training treats to your dog as a reward in house training, too many treats will spoil your dog. Your dog will then only work only for the treats.

If you should stop giving him the treats, your dog may stop obeying you completely. Your dog must understand that he must work for anything he gets from you. This is why when your dog has come to understand what he must do when it comes to commands that you should start to slowly faze out the treats.

Puppy training treats come in very handy when training dogs and can be a valuable resource, however many remain convinced that one treat probably works just as well as the next Dogs may decide they like one treat better than the next but making that decision requires options. No doubt if they are simply presented with a treat most dogs would not decline.

Like children, dogs and puppies will test their boundaries with you to see what they can get away with. Your dog will tend to test your boundaries even after you have had him for several years.

Each time you let him out he will run to the edge of where he is allowed to go and then look back to see if you are watching before contemplating whether or not to go further. They like to know their place and what they are and are not allowed to do.

When you think of it, your dog already knows how to sit, lay down, and relieve himself. You need to learn some dog training basics to teach him to do these things when and where you want and to do them effectively on command.

Introducing your dog to dog training basics involves teaching your dog in a way that he can come to understand what you want him to do. If you can come to understand more about his world, how he learns, and how he communicates, the more effective your dog training sessions will be.

Exposure to some dog training basics can help you to understand the fundamentals of how dogs interact and develop, as well as some of the principles that make obedience training work. You can then use this information to successfully train your dog to be a better companion.

After doing some research into some dog training basics some every interesting information is usually revealed.

As most dog owners and dog trainers agree a trained dog is a happy dog. As pointed out before, dogs and puppies also crave rules and boundaries in the family unit, since they like to know their place and what they can an can not get away with.

All of this stems from the fact that that dogs are natural pack animals, since they are born into a dog pack and certain dog pack behaviors are instinctively instilled in them. When the dog is removed from that pack and go to their new home, you become part of the dog pack, because in every dog pack there must me a leader, and you must fill that role for your dog.

Speaking of natural dog behaviors that are instilled in them, is the fact the drive to play is one that is not inherently part of every dog’s genetic make up. In the wild among wolves, play is a natural educational mechanism for puppies to build their survival skills. This play consists of pouncing, and jumping and wrestling.

These behaviors are not as critical for the more domesticated dog, and puppies are usually removed from their litter and mother when they are too young to have exposed to learning these skills. This means it falls to their new human pack to help them through the use of some dog training basics to develop these skills.

Another piece of information that seems to be generally agreed upon is that the most important part of the dog training basics is praise. You should never yell at your dog whether you are trying to get him to do something or if he does anything wrong. This is all part of positive reinforcement theory. You should always try to use positive reinforcement with your dog instead of punishment.

Consistency in dog training is also important. Any bad behaviors if not corrected, can grow into bad habits. Your dog needs to understand why it was okay to jump on you one time, but when he did another time he was scolded for it. Otherwise your dog can be confused to this could undo all of your training.

Many other dog training basics are really just plain old fashioned common sense. You should use the dog training methods that work best at turning your puppy into an ideal companion. . There are many other basics to dog training, but as one size doesn’t fit all, they may vary from dog owner to dog owner.

Reward training or positive dog training generally consists of keeping the attention on what the dog is doing right, is usually recognized as not only the most effective method, and as a method that a positive experience for the dog, but also the most modern method of training a dog, but reward training probably is likely older than the other dog training methods, and probably goes way back thousands of years. It is quite conceivable that reward training for dogs has been around as long humans have interacted with dogs.

The earliest known domestic dogs go back to the domestication of abandoned wolf puppies the early humans took in from the gray wolf several tens of thousands of years ago. These early domesticated dogs were trained to do task for humans that included acting as a guard animal, or to herd animals. Early humans probably used some kind of reward training when they started taming the wolf pups that would eventually evolve into modern dogs.

This unique connection existing between dog and man continues up to today. Dogs now usually perform many tasks for their owners, like herding, guarding, hunting, and rescue work or special assistance.

Many advocates of reward training are far less enthusiastic about other methods of dog training, such as those that involve the use of the traditional leash and dog collar training method. However, as far as many other experts are concerned, the best way to train any individual dog is usually a combination of leash/collar training and reward training.

Something that complicates thing a bit is that a training method that works well for one dog may be totally not be appropriate for another dog. Some dogs will only respond well when it comes to reward training but not very well with dog leash training or even dog collar training. It the same time there are other dogs that can respond to leash/collar training but may not be motivated by reward training. It is believed that most dogs will tend to fall somewhere in the middle of these two extremes.

Clicker training is considered to be one of the most popular forms of reward training used today. While clicker training may not be the correct form of training for every dog, it can be a really effective method of training many dogs. How clicker training works by teaching the dog to associate a clicking sound with a reward, like a treat.

You can actually teach your dog the learn without any physical compulsion or correcting at all. The clicker is just a toy-like device used in the initial stages of dog draining. The trainer clicks the clicker when the dog does something good, and is followed immediately by a treat. Over time, the dog will soon learn to respond to the clicker alone.

Positive reinforcement using treats and unlimited praise is the all important key to proper dog training, whether it is with reward training, or dog leash or dog collar training, because it is effective at getting your dog’s respect and attention. Both you and your dog will benefit, since in time you will have a faithful companion you can be proud of.

When you start training your dog you will soon enough realize that you need a lot of patience in addition to giving your pet a lot of love. In fact first and foremost the most important thing that can be considered as a dog training tip is patience. This is especially true with dog training. Most people are familiar with the phrase ‘you can’t teach an old dog new tricks’, while not always true with older dogs, it is however certainly easier to teach a younger dog when it comes to dog housebreaking obedience training.

However, many dog owners lack patience and as a result, the owner will be unable to keep from becoming when things do not go according to plan, and this can create the negative impact that can result by such a deviation from the positive-reinforcement route.

It may seem strange to consider retraining an owner before he or she trains a dog, but modern dog training techniques require a level of patience and calmness not always possessed by dog owners. Much research and experience has helped lead to an incontrovertible fact that successful dog training is dependent upon the use of positive reinforcement.

While being patient is the most important dog training tip there are other tips that can help too.

Dog Training Tip - Start Your Puppy Training Early

When you bring home a new puppy, remember it is still important to be patient with your puppy training. The earlier you start training the puppy, the quicker he will understand and respond to your training commands, but make sure not to rush the puppy training process. You can begin the training of your puppy if he is as young as 8 weeks old. Puppies are full of energy and they are just trying to adapt and explore the new world that is around them. Of course this will mean you will have to invest some time for training and a exercise a little extra patience, but it should be worth it in the end.

Dog Training Tip – Where to Find Information

When it comes to finding information there are books like Secrets to Dog Training that come highly recommended that one can read, and certainly over and over again, the necessity of patience is emphasized in Secrets to Dog Training . There are classes to take, and people with dog training experience to talk to. Check out The American Kennel Club web site where they provide some tips.

Dog Training Tip – Looking at Dog Training Methods

It is not difficult to find dog training information, what may be difficult is deciding what school of thought you may agree with, since there are many schools of thought when it comes to dog training. How do you want to train your dog? Will you be using a crate? Will you only use rewards for good behavior? Since it is important to be able to develop a truly great relationship based on respect with your dog training you must decide how you want to go about it.

In conclusion patience is important in dog training whether a puppy or mature dog. There are many places to find information. You need to decide what method of dog training you are comfortable with. Careful research is the only answer.

If it is a puppy, you will need much more patience and time to house train him correctly.

While dogs are very known as faithful and loyal creatures, it is also true that most dog owners want very much to have a calm and obedient dog. Many dog owners and breeder believe that calm and obedient dogs with a least some basic dog training are also healthier. At the same time, with basic dog training these dogs will have fewer conflicts with people and with other dogs.

When you want your puppy relieve himself outside, you should first select an area outside for him to use. For when you want him to go outside, a way to condition him is by saying “outside” or “out” in a high-pitched tone of voice, this will soon get him used to the idea of where he is going and why. He will start to recognize this command and realize that it is time for him to go to the bathroom.

Remember to praise your puppy for his successful outdoor elimination. You can even give him a treat when he follows or obeys this and other command.

Whatever stage of training we give the dogs, there must always be some basic dog training and commands that a dog need to understand and follow.

Some of these basic dog training commands include:

· Sit – Being able to train your dog the ’sit’ command represents on of the most useful lesson he can learn. It an important part of any basic dog training program.

· Stay – This is an important basic dog training command since a dog that is considered well-trained dog should be able to remain where his or her owner commands.

· Down – Being able to lying down on command is also just as necessary command that is part of any successful basic dog training program.

· No – the word “no” is one important word that all dogs and puppies must learn early on and obey. Training your dog to respond to this key command can help save a whole lot of problems later on.

A well-trained dog should be able to respond well to all any of the owner’s commands, without being confused or show any displeasure. In order to achieve this it is necessary to embark on a good basic dog training program like the highly recommended Secrets to Dog Training. By your dog becoming well-trained he also becomes a good companion to you and your family. Also, you should have fewer problems with regarding him with people in general or with other dogs.

Exposing your dog to obedience training is essential and is also good for the dog in that it is a great way to satisfy some of the his needs, for example, helping him to get enough exercise, as well as improving the relationship he has with you.

When you have a puppy or for that matter any hard-to-train dog, you need to start in right away with some basic dog training at least if you want to have many happy years with your lovable friend and faithful companion.

When you can teach your dog to obey you, you’re increasing the quality of life for both you and your dog. As it often is with any healthy relationship, both parties need to develop an understanding of who is the boss, and what their expectations are.

It would be great to able to take your dog out for a walk without being jerked around on a leash. When telling your dog to ’stay’ and knowing that you won’t need to keep a leash ready. When letting your dog play with the kids it would be assuring to know that no one will need a band aid or disinfectant later.

When used in dog training, psychology can be simple. Good behavior is to be rewarded, while bad behavior needs to be corrected. When you reward your dog’s good behavior, he will learn to enjoy obeying your commands, and also to associate good feelings with good behavior. Similarly, your dog will learn to avoid bad behavior, and all the headaches that could cause you, and, indirectly, your dog.
That’s all there is to it.

Rewards are also simple. You can reward your dog by heaping praise on him, giving a thorough petting, or giving a treat. You should be careful about overdoing it. Rewards are rewards, not bribes, and if you start to use rewards as bribes, your dog may learn to never do your bidding, unless you have some kind of tasty treat or a toy of some kind on hand.

If you you are worried about over-feeding your dog, you can use a technique called ‘clicker training’. You can use a child’s toy that gives out a loud clicking sound. The idea behind clicker training is that it is necessary to feed your dog some treats, however every time he gets a treat, give a loud ‘click’. This way your dog should eventually start associating the sound of the click with getting a treat, and then be able to associate a click with good feelings.
